Spanish 1
Students study grammar and vocabulary pertaining to the family, their life at school and at home and other aspects of their personal lives.  They also develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Spanish 2     Prerequisite:  Grade 'C' or above in #600
Students study the present, past and future tenses along with vocabulary relevant to contexts they would encounter in Spanish-speaking countries.  They further develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in order to be able to function in these contexts.

Spanish 3     Prerequisite: Grade 'C' or above in #610
Students study all the verb tenses and review grammatical concepts in order to read and to write about authentic Spanish texts.  They continue improving their listening and speaking skills by watching and discussing a Spanish soap opera.

Spanish 4     Prerequisite: Grade 'C' or above in #620
Students work in listening and speaking skills by discussing current events in our society as well as in the Spanish-speaking world.  They read novels, plays and other examples of Hispanic literature.  They study idiomatic expressions as well as other vocabulary and grammatical concepts that contrast greatly with English.

French 1
This course is designed to introduce students to communication in listening, reading, writing and speaking French.  Students use a variety of classroom materials in addition to the textbook, including tapes and workbooks.  Classes provide meaningful situations for language use to develop these skills and to learn about French-speaking cultures.

French 2     Prerequisite: Grade 'C' or above in #640 
This course is designed for students who wish to increase reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in French through the use of textbooks, workbooks, tapes and other learning materials.  It provides meaningful situations for language use to develop these skills and to learn about French-speaking cultures
 

Course # 660     Credits: 1
French 3     Prerequisite: Grade 'C' or above in #650
In this course, students work primarily in small groups developing more complex expressions of language.  Vocabulary is more abstract, more complex verb tense sequences are introduced, and longer reading selections are studied.   Students work extensively with pronouns and idiomatic expressions.
 

Course # 670     Credits: 1
French 4     Prerequisite: Grade 'C' or above in #660
This course reviews all the main grammar introduced at earlier levels and introduces literary vocabulary and grammar.  It continues with development of idiomatic expressions and more complex use of the four language skills.  Students frequently do independent work in small groups.
