Monsignor Leininger Chapter National Honor Society
Students do not apply for membership in the National Honor Society, rather membership is considered an honor which is bestowed upon a student by an appointed faculty committee on behalf of the school faculty.

All sophomores, juniors and seniors who achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 are eligible for selection to the National Honor Society. Academically eligible students receive a student activity information form from the chapter advisor after the first semester cumulative grade point averages have been computed. This form is returned to the advisor by the stated deadline and is then used by an appointed faculty committee of five members in determining a student's qualifications for membership based upon the information provided in regard to character, leadership and service. Completion and submission of the student activity information form is not an application for membership, nor a guarantee of selection for membership.

If a candidate is not selected for membership by a majority vote of the appointed faculty committee, he or she becomes eligible for reconsideration the following academic year provided that a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 has been maintained.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
To be eligible for competition a student must:

1. Be enrolled full time as a high school student.
2. Be a citizen of the United States or be a permanent resident or be in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.
3. Be taking the test at the proper time and no later than the third year in grades 9 - 12.

Different types of scholarships are offered to those students who meet certain participation requirements.
Students qualify for this scholarship by receiving a high PSAT Selection Index score. The 15,000 top Commended Scholars nationally go on to compete as National Merit Semifinalists. They may become Finalists by confirming their PSAT score with a comparable SAT I score. In addition, they must have a record of academic excellence throughout high school, endorsement and recommendation by the high school principal, activities and contributions to the school and community. Approximately 90% of each year's Semifinalists qualify as Finalists.
