Office History

Mission and Services

The mission of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is to serve those serving the young Catholic Church in the Diocese of Columbus. With an emphasis on working with local parish and school leaders, the office develops and maintains outreach services to youth, young adult, and campus ministries within our diocese.

In response to the Gospel, and in pursuit of our mission, the office delivers the following services to the local Church:

Adult Training and Certification

  • Provide ongoing education and formation for parish and school leaders:

    • Parish youth ministers

    • High school campus ministers

    • Parish young adult ministers

    • College/university campus ministers

    • Parish recreation leaders

    • Catholic Scouting leaders

    • Safe environment coordinators

  • Coordinate gatherings of leaders for formation and networking

  • Coordinate certification program based on the national competencies for lay ecclesial youth ministry leaders approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Consultation and Resources

  • Provide ongoing consultation for local leaders on a variety of topics related to young people:

    • Advocacy

    • Catechesis

    • Pastoral care

    • Leadership development

    • Community life

    • Justice and service

    • Evangelization

    • Prayer and worship

  • Assist local leaders with the implementation of diocesan policies

  • Research and review the latest resources related to working with young Catholics

  • Assist parish leaders in selecting resources used for local programs

  • Publish printed and online resources

Advocacy

  • Advocate for the needs of Catholic young people

  • Advocate for adult leaders serving Catholic young people

  • Advocate for the fields of youth and young adult ministry

  • Work with community organizations serving young people

Child Protection

  • Coordinate safe environment training for all employees and volunteers in the diocese

  • Coordinate continuing education training for all clergy and key lay ecclesial ministers and leaders

  • Supervise volunteer Protecting God’s Children facilitators

  • Create, implement, review, diocesan policies

  • Assist Chancery in the annual diocesan audit conducted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and local audit process

Direct Programs for Young People

  • Coordinate diocesan activities for young people including:

    • Diocesan Youth Council

    • Youth Rally

    • XLT

    • Walking Stations of the Cross

    • Scout Day with the Bishop

    • Catholic Scouting Emblem and Formation Programs

    • Parish Recreation Programs

    • Young adult ministry initiatives

  • Coordinate diocesan participation in the National Catholic Youth Conference

  • Coordinate diocesan participation in World Youth Day
