1.    Do You Hear the Call to Leadership?  Join the Department of Education Staff in a 3-day exploration of the role and responsibilities of a Diocese of Columbus Catholic elementary or secondary school leader.  Two (2) semester graduate professional development credits or two (2) CEUs will be offered for this reflective investigation into the world of administration in Catholic schools.  Discussion, information, discovery, and reflection are the format of the workshop.  Not only will you spend time learning about Catholic school administration, but you will also have the opportunity to explore your leadership skills and their application to an educational setting.  The Diocese of Columbus is looking for people who believe it is their vocation to help foster the younger generations of the Catholic Church through the system of Catholic education.

3.    A Kid Like Me Across the Sea:  Germany:  Feb. 25, 2005, 4:30-9:00pm, and Feb. 26, 2005, 8:30am-4:30pm, Ashland University, Columbus Center, 1900 East Dublin-Granville Rd., Columbus, OH    43229.

        This workshop will enable participants to become familiar with techniques used to compare culture, geography, and daily life of children in Germany and the U.S.A.  Social Studies standards related to practices and products of diverse cultures, tolerance education, impact of natural resources on human needs, economics and global interaction will be addressed.  Participants will engage in hands-on activities that can be adapted to many grade levels, and they will receive a set of ready to use lessons, transparencies, and resources published by Goethe Institut/InterNationes.  Participants are eligible to apply for a study/travel tour of Germany in summer 2005 or 2006 completely funded by the Goethe Institut and its sponsors.

4.    The Center for Africa Studies Summer K-12 Workshop, "African Women in Comparative Perspective", will take place June 12-18th.  The workshop will be held at the Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center on the OSU campus,
153 W. 12th Avenue, Columbus, OH    43210.  The main objective of the workshop is to provide teachers with multidisciplinary perspectives for understanding the experiences of African women.  The workshop will emphasize the experiences of African women from the pre-colonial era to the present, their legal and socio-economic status; their religious, political, productive, and reproductive roles; the impact of colonialism and post-independence development; feminism and representation issues.  Educators will gain important insights into the remarkable diversity of Africa and a nuanced approach for the study of African women.  More information and registration is available at:  http://oia.osu.edu/cas/outreach.html.

5.    Teacher Education Scholars Program:  Ashland University is seeking nominations for the 2005 Teacher Education Scholars Program.  The Program is designed to identify high school juniors who appear to be strong candidates for the field of education.
        Selected juniors will be recognized as AU Teacher Education Scholars during the Teacher Education Scholars Seminar which will be held on April 23, 2005.  They and their parents will be invited to attend the special one-day seminar at Ashland University where they will be given an opportunity to explore the education profession in greater depth and to be recognized for their academic achievement.
        High school juniors are to be nominated for consideration by teachers, school counselors, and administrators.  Students will need to satisfy eligibility criteria to become Ashland University Teacher Education Scholars and nominations will be limited to a certain number based on high school size.  If your High School has more students that meet the criteria, please let us know and we will consider additional applications.  A complete description of the program and the appropriate forms are enclosed for distribution.  These forms may be duplicated.  Your cooperation in forwarding the forms to the appropriate personnel would be greatly appreciated.  Nominations must be received by March 4, 2005 so that we can mail acceptance letters to your students and receive back reservations.

6.    Central Ohio Writers of Literature for Children:  This conference, formerly called "Writing for Children" will be held at the Riffe Center in Columbus on April 23, 2005.  Featured authors include Margaret Peterson Haddix, Robert Pattle, and Anna G. Hines.
        This event is sponsored by St. Joseph Montessori School and Second Avenue Elementary School.

7.    Strategies for Solving Math Word Problems that Build Student Self-Confidence:  Learn how to help students solve word problems successfully - even complex word problems - with these new, innovative, step-by-step strategies.  Discover how to give all your students confidence and success at solving word problems.
        This workshop will be held in Columbus on February 16 at the Concourse Hotel, 4300 International Gateway.  The workshop is for all teachers serving Grades 1-6.  To register go to www.oci-sems.com.

8.    Chemistry Concepts in Science Class Workshop:  Learn more than a hundred practical activities for building real understanding of chemistry concepts relating to properties of matter, the Periodic Table, atoms, bonding, moles, chemical reactions, analyses, acids & bases, metals, electrochemistry, heat, polymers, and more.  Increase student motivation and achievement through proven teaching strategies consistent with the current National Science Education Standards.
        The workshop will be held on February 9 in Columbus at the Holiday Inn on the Lane.

9.    Journalism Training Program:  The American Society of Newspaper Editors, with the financial support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is entering the fifth year of a national project to improve scholastic journalism.
        Next summer, nearly 150 high school teachers will attend two-week, for-credit journalism-training programs taking place in 2005 at:
                Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, July 10-22
                University of California at Berkeley, June 5-17
                University of South Florida, Tampa, July 17-29
                University of Texas at Austin, July 17-29
                Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina, July 10-22
        There is no cost to the teacher or his/her high school.  Tuition, graduate credits, transportation, meals and housing are covered for those selected.
        ASNE is especially interested in drawing teachers from highly diverse urban school districts and isolated rural areas, where resources for scholastic journalism programs tend to be most strained.
        ASNE is making this offer because its members are committed to helping nurture the next generation of journalists and imparting an appreciation for the First Amendment among all students.
