IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1.    The Annenberg/CPB Channel Announces Its Free Summer Institute Schedule:  Continuing the tradition of quality professional development--at no cost--the Annenberg/CPB Channel is featuring a full range of Annenberg/CPB's renowned teacher education programming.  This summer many workshops and courses will be broadcast on the Channel to accommodate institute-style participation.  That is, the workshops and courses will be aired at the same time of day, Monday through Thursday, for two weeks.  Complete a free workshop or course and earn certificates that may be used for in-service and recertification credit.  Graduate credit is also available at reasonable cost.  
       
Offerings include workshops, courses, and  libraries in mathematics, science, social studies, literature, and educational issues.

        The Annenberg/CPB Channel is also simulcast on the Annenberg/CPB Web site on a broadband stream.  Visitors with broadband internet access--anything faster than a dial-up connection--can click on the "Watch It Now" link at http://www.learner.org and see a continuous stream of Channel programming.  This broadband simulcast is free, and no log-in or registration is required.

2.    Journey With Us To Bulgaria:  Bridges for Education is inviting you to join us at an international conversational English program during July of 2003 in Bulgaria.  BFE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to "building bridges of tolerance and understanding using English as a bridge."
        Program participants are teens and adults from many countries in Eastern Europe.  This is an opportunity to make many lasting international friends.
        Volunteers are teachers, people with various backgrounds, college and high school students.  No special language skills are required as all activities are in English.
        The program lasts for three weeks with a fourth week of travel sponsored by the ministry of education.  Participants will have the opportunity to visit historical sites, museums and resort areas.
        Over 100 teachers from central Ohio have previously participated in this program.

4.    Education Appreciation Weekend, Friday March 28 - Sunday, March 30:  During this special weekend, Borders stores will be thanking current and retired educations (teachers, administrators, librarians, and home-schoolers included) by offering them a 25% discount on almost everything in the store, including personal and classroom purchases!  There will also be educator-oriented events and goodies (while supplies last), so be sure to stop by with your educator ID/ or the address of the parish for catechists.

5.    Weekly Religion Ideas - week of 3/24 - 3/28:

        For teachers:  A few videos that would be good to view during Lent:  VC 7209 "The Church Celebrates the Reconciling God".  This would give background in understanding the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  VC 7194 Liturgies of the Triduum:  Holy Thursday.  VC 7195 (Good Friday) and VC 7196 (Easter Vigil).  (These last videos can also be used for high school students).
        For the Classroom:  There is a penance service in Religion Teacher's Journal, February 2003, "The Healing Tree" pp.24-25, that can be adapted for a penance service for students alone or along with their families.  In the same issue is "The Way of the Cross",  pp.12&14.  Use it with students in the classroom or in Church.  Another Stations of the Cross is Following Jesus (A Way of the Cross for Children) by Marlene Halpin, OP.  It is from Ave Maria Press (1-800-282-1865).  There  is also The Way of the Cross  Prayer Services for Religious Educators by Gwen Costello pp.30-33.  It is from Twenty-Third Publications (1-800-321-0411).   Some activities and prayers to use when sharing the Sunday Gospels are Celebrating the Gospels by Gaynell Gronin from Liguori Press (1-800-325-9521).
        Resources:  A good resource for teaching for helping students understand the different areas of the Church and symbols in the Church so that they can feel at home in it is This Is Our Church (A Guide for Children) by James A. Comiskey from Liturgical Press (1-800-858-5450).  It is $4.95.  Two books that give a better understanding of the Bible are:  Biblical Fundamentalism (What Every Catholic Should Know) by Ronald D. Witherup ($8.95) and also his book The Bible Companion which gives a summary and structure for each book of the Bible ($14.95).  Both books are from the Crossroad Publishing Co.  (1-800-462-6420).

            - OSU fee waiver request forms for summer quarter are due March 21.
