Bring Down the Walls

Hunger, indifference, prejudice, discrimination, are some of the walls that prevent growth of humans and interfere with human dignity. This tape celebrates 100 years of Catholic Social Teaching from 1891 – 1991 from our Popes and Bishops. It also catalogs the action our Church has taken in regard to Jesus’ message of Social Teaching. Catholics are motivated to become more conscious of the social dimensions of faith in this presentation.

A lot of information in a short time. Stop it and discuss or pass out handouts while viewing tape.

Good tape.

Adult is correct level.

Making Sense of Christian Morality

Tape 3: The Gospel is a Social Message: Justice in Christian Tradition

Third in a series of four videos in which Paulist priest and moral theologian Richard Sparks provides insights into living Christian values. Fr. Sparks attempts to show how Christian morality "makes sense" in a time when we all have complex and challenging decisions to make. Moral theology is expressed in a realistic and pastoral way. Portrayals of contemporary life and enacted scenes make these insights more easily understood.

  • The Gospel is a Social Message explores:
  • why churches must speak out on issues like racism, militarism and economic justice
  • "social sin" and who is accountable for it
  • the meaning of "common good"
  • the meaning of "communitive", "distributive" and "social" justice
  • the "seamless garment" approach to life issues

why "whenever life and human dignity are threatened, Christians ought to be present and active with both immediate aid and long-term reform"

Good. No negative feedback. Age appropriate for what is listed.

Columbus Leadership Prayer Breakfast

Speaker: Dr. Anthony Campolo

Dr. Campolo never uses the word "Solidarity," but his talk defines it, personalizes it – a mother and child on a grassy runway in Haiti, a bag lady at the University of Pennsylvania, a lady of the night (Agnes) in Honolulu.

Jr. High not appropriate. Might show to 8th graders at the end of the year. Ok for Senior High. Fantastic for adults. Good teacher resource for stories, good for inservices. Self-worth, very valuable.

Communities of Salt and Light

In 1993 the American bishops reminded all Catholics that each parish is to be a Community of Salt and Light. One sign that the gospel is at work in that parish community is the quality of the social justice ministries in that parish. This pastoral not only explains the roots of each Catholic’s call to social justice, but also gives many detailed examples of various parishes responding to that call.

It presents seven elements of the social mission of parishes as a framework for planning and assessing the social justice ministry. Those viewing will be challenged to put their faith into action and seek justice and peace in their parish, local community and beyond.

Excellent. Youth involved. Good for parish councils, teacher’s groups, whole parish.
