Vatican II: A
Civilization of Love Hallel Communications, 1988 Each video in this series captures the feeling of the transition that took place after Vatican II. TAPE 1. Vatican II in History - Situates the most recent council in the sequence of other councils, but shows how it was different. It emphasizes how it immediately had and continues to have impact upon the lives of Catholics. TAPE 2. Liturgy - Explains how the reforms came about and the results of those reforms. TAPE 3. Religious Freedom - Treats some of the issues experienced in the Church in America, where pluralism and liberty have been consistently upheld. TAPE 4. Evangelization - Illustrates the Church's place in a larger cultural framework. It briefly deals with the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. TAPE 5. Laity - Shows how all baptized Christians now are being called to exercise a genuine apostolate by their activity on behalf of bringing the Good News to everyone. TAPE 6. Ecumenism - The Ecumenical movement has been called the miracle of the 20th century. Ecumenism refers to the promotion of unity among the Christian churches. Half a century of study and experience by European theologians began to blossom at Vatican II when biblical, liturgical, lay and missionary renewal all pointed toward ecumenism. TAPE 7. Mary - The Council did not issue a separate document on the Virgin Mary. In "Lumen Gentium", its document on the Church, Mary is seen not so much in her individual and unique vocation as the Mother of God, but rather as the most perfect member of the community of the People of God, the Church. The situation of women is changing in our society and many women are now looking at Mary not so much as an intercessor with God, but rather as the model of a mature woman who heard the word of God, understood it, freely accepted her destiny in life, and without consulting male authorities carried out the will of God with courage and love. TAPE 8. The Word - The Council opened with a liturgy in which the Book of the Holy Scriptures was carried in solemn procession among the Conciliar Fathers and placed before them for veneration. This rite, Council to emphasize the Holy Scriptures as being at the center of the life of the Church. Because the Scriptures contain the inspired word of God, the Council affirms that "...all preaching of the Church, as indeed the Christian religion itself, should be nourished and ruled by Sacred Scriptures."

| TAPE 9. After The Council - Every Ecumenical Council has been followed by a period of change, if not conflict, for the Church. Although the experience of transition after the Vatican II Ecumenical Council is less dramatic than in some of the past post-conciliar periods, even today the Church is encountering difficulties in achieving the renewal called for by this council. The Church of the future, however, is already emerging with a more truly world-wide dimension than ever before, yet existing in every local church community as the full embodiment of Christ's saving presence. | ||

High Concept
Animation: Grasshoppers, Mr. Tao Don Bosco Multimedia. 1994 The pace of these short discussion-starter videos is so quick there is little time to take it all in. A single point may trigger five or more associated ideas. The aim of these films is to generate hours of discussion in exposing some of the foibles in human nature and the conditions we create for ourselves. Similarly, these encounters with characters sometimes bigger than life, are reminiscent of the parables found in the Scriptures. Through twists and turns, exaggeration and reversals, these episodes demand a new look at what we take for granted. It is suggested viewing more than once, perhaps at the beginning and halfway through discussion time. Be attentive to the groups' needs and observations. Many different reactions may surface. 1. Grasshoppers - (9 min.) The theme of this part is one of hope. History reveals the cycle of our inhumanity to others, but the persistence and resilience of nature to recover does not necessarily preclude the same for human beings. We are asked to slow down and reflect on the beliefs, values and meanings we hold to be worth living for. 2. Mr. Tao - (3 min.) As the pilgrim climbs higher and higher in the search, the goal becomes more elusive and far beyond the usual sources of wisdom. The human quest for meaning is a journey with a surprise ending. |
